Alzheimer's and the Senses

A degenerative disease, Alzheimer's occurs in men and women of any age. It is more frequently seen in people who are more than 65 years of age, but occurs at younger ages, too. If it is the latter case it is called early onset Alzheimer's disease and usually advances faster than ordinary Alzheimer's.

Why Salty Taste Alzheimer?

There is a new test to prove Alzheimer's - an odor and taste memory test. One of the early indications of the disease is loss of memory with regard to some senses. There is also an issue about a salty taste linked with Alzheimer's.

Problems with taste are quite uncommon - they could indicate diabetes or a deficit of zinc. If you are experiencing an odd salty taste, talk to your doctor to find out if it is because of one of the above problems or because of some medication you are taking.

The functions or the three cranial nerves, CN VII , CN IX and CN X of the tongue overlap to a certain extent, so since they cover for each other, so to speak. This is what makes problems with taste so infrequent.

Taste problems may result from stroke injuries, aneurysms and tumour but these generally occur only on any one side of the tongue. Complete loss of sensation, or generalized problems with sensation, are usually because of a central tumour or injury.

A localized deficit is rarer, but may not be observed because of the nerve coverage overlap on the tongue. Out of a dozen older people who participated in a test, none could identify salt in small areas of the tongue, none of a dozen younger people failed to identify it.

In a worse problem, there is a salty or bitter taste that persists for older people, and these are not properly comprehended. They are more likely to be due to dental and oral hygiene and health issues, physical damage, various medications or viruses.

In salty taste Alzheimer, the salty taste experienced by Alzheimer's patients is quite distinct from salty taste due to other causes. There is loss of taste experience rather than a persistent bitter or salty taste, interest in food reduces, and there is often weight loss.
Are you suffering from a problem with salty taste Alzheimer? It may comfort you to know that others suffer from problems with taste too - no less than 200,000 people complain to doctors of chemosensory trouble. Physicians feel that many cases go unnoticed, as well.
