Although the traditional medical community is far from embracing holistic medicine, some strides have been made, with traditional doctors and caregivers beginning to see the potential benefits of combining traditional medical technology and technique with holistic remedies. With some time and continued track-record of success, holistic medicine is bound to eventually receive its deserved attention.

The Controversy Surrounding Holistic Medicine

The recent emergence of holistic medicine and remedies has become a controversial topic in the healthcare industry. Traditional healthcare providers often see holistic medicine as a competitor to their services, and have thus attacked this new medical sector, claiming that holistic remedies and treatments are ineffective or even harmful. In spite of the propaganda, however, holistic medicine grows in popularity year after year.

Tenets of Holistic Medicine

The fact of the matter is that holistic medicine predates what is now considered the "traditional" medical field. Ever since the dawn of civilization, doctors, physicians, and medicine men have concocted remedies using natural herbs. In addition, holistic medicine not only concentrates on treating physical maladies; it also takes into account the mental, emotional, and even spiritual aspects of one's health, a consideration that traditional doctors are reluctant to address.

One of the major controversies between traditional and holistic medical treatment has to do with drugs and prescriptions. While more and more evidence suggests that all-natural remedies are as effective if not more effective than the synthetic, chemical-based drugs produced by the Pharmaceutical industry, an intense smear campaign has been waged by these companies in order to discredit the use of holistic remedies.

The Biggest Fear surrounding Holistic Medicine

Clearly, the fear among the medical industry is that more effective holistic remedies that offer fewer if any side-effects will eventually cut into the profits of the Pharmaceutical giants. Also, Doctors in America worry that their narrow traditional approach to treating patients will lose favor with the public if more and more people are cured using the comprehensive holistic approach. Because the healthcare industry is a multi billion-dollar industry in the United States, there is a powerful lobby against any new medical breakthroughs that threaten to encroach upon the profits and market share of traditional healthcare providers.

In spite of these efforts, new medical technology and techniques continue to develop and bear out positive results, many of which fall under the category of holistic medicine. Chiropractic medicine, for example, is now proven to improve the immune system, organ function, circulation, and energy level in addition to correcting subluxation and other bone and joint issues. Eastern techniques such as yoga and acupuncture are also popular holistic remedies.

The battle to cure cancer has even benefited from all-natural, holistic remedies: thousands of cases are reported ach year of individuals diagnosed with cancer who sought holistic treatment rather than radiation or chemotherapy and managed to put their cancer into remission without the horrible side effects of traditional medicine.
